DBS checks when hiring a private carer in the UK

This is not medical advice. Big on Health is a UK review site. For health worries, speak to your GP, pharmacist, or NHS 111.

When a family hires help at home, a DBS check is one of the usual safety questions. DBS means Disclosure and Barring Service. This page is plain English only. It is not legal advice, and it is not a care agency.

What a DBS check is for

A DBS check looks at criminal-record information held for England and Wales (and related barred-list checks where the role qualifies). Families use it to understand whether someone they may invite into the home has relevant recorded history. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own disclosure systems; confirm what applies if the carer or the work is there.

What to ask before someone starts

  • May we see a recent DBS certificate (or an Update Service status if they use it)?
  • Which level of check was done, and for what role?
  • When was it issued, and has anything changed since?
  • Can you provide two recent references as well?
  • Agencies and platforms often handle checks as part of their process. Direct hires usually mean you must ask and record what you saw. Keep copies only as long as you need them for a sensible household record, and store them carefully.

    Honest limits

A clear DBS result is not a guarantee of good care. Training, experience, references, and a written agreement still matter. A DBS check also does not replace NHS or local-authority assessments when those apply.
