Tattoo aftercare: what to look for

Ad. This page contains advertising. If you buy through the links on this page, we earn a commission. This does not change the price you pay.

This page is a how-to-read-a-label note for a UK reader. It is not a ranking, and it is not a set of clinical instructions. We do not name a winning product here.

A new tattoo is a wound. If the skin is broken, swollen, hot, leaking, or you feel unwell, stop reading this site and speak to your tattoo artist or a clinician. We do not examine skin, and we do not prescribe.

What this page can help with

Once your artist has told you what to use in the first days, you may later want a simple product for dry, tight, or flaky skin around a settled tattoo. That is a cosmetic choice. The useful work is to read the pack slowly.

Look for a short ingredient list that you can understand. If your skin is easily irritated, look for a product that is labelled fragrance-free. Look for a product that is actually sold by a named UK retailer, so that you can see the same pack in a shop or on that shop’s site.

“Soothes dry skin” and “for dry skin” are cosmetic lines. They are not a promise that the product heals a tattoo.

What to skip on this site

We will not tell you that a balm prevents infection. We will not tell you that a cream treats scarring. We will not give you a washing routine that belongs to your artist.

Until retailer programmes are open, we will not fill this page with product names. When links exist, they will sit below this Ad label, and each one will send you off this site to a shop that holds the stock.

For a comparison of balm types, see Tattoo balms compared UK. For packs without added fragrance, see Fragrance-free aftercare.

Pages that contain affiliate links are advertisements and are labelled Ad before you are asked to click. We may earn a commission if you buy through those links. This does not change the price you pay. We do not hold stock and we do not take payment on this site.

This site uses cosmetic language only. It is not medical advice. Nothing here is a claim that a product heals the skin, prevents infection, or treats scarring.
