This is not medical advice. Big on Health is a UK review site. For health worries, speak to your GP, pharmacist, or NHS 111.
Respite care gives the usual unpaid carer a break. Someone else covers for a short spell so the main carer can rest, work, or travel. Families use it after a hospital stay, when fatigue builds, or while they wait for a longer care plan. This page is plain English only. It is not a care agency and it does not assess anyone.

What respite usually looks like
- Home-based cover. A private carer or agency visits or stays so the person can remain at home.
- Day services. The person spends part of the day in a day centre or similar setting.
- Short stay away from home. A temporary place in a care home or specialist unit, when that is right and available.
Ask who pays, how many hours are covered, and whether the replacement carer can do the same tasks as the usual arrangement.
Practical checks before you book
- Which tasks will the cover carer do, and which will they not do?
- May we see recent DBS information, training that matches our needs, and references?
- Who covers if the booked carer is ill on the day?
- Is there a written rate, minimum hours, travel, and cancelation rule?
- Have we checked whether the local authority or NHS may still offer some respite support?

When another option may fit better
If you need ongoing night cover rather than a short break, see Overnight care at home in the UK. If needs are high most days, Live-in care in the UK or a different setting may be the honest next conversation. Compare options on Comparing care options in the UK.
