This is not medical advice. Big on Health is a UK review site. For health worries, speak to your GP, pharmacist, or NHS 111.
Live-in care means a carer stays in the home for longer stretches, often with their own room, instead of short visiting slots. Families sometimes choose it when needs are high overnight, when travel to appointments is hard, or when a care home does not feel right yet. This page is plain English only. It is not a care agency and it does not assess anyone.

How it usually differs from visiting care
- Hours. Visiting care is booked in slots. Live-in care covers more of the day and night, with rest periods agreed in writing.
- Space. The carer normally needs a private bedroom and use of bathroom and kitchen facilities.
- Pay. Rates are usually quoted weekly or monthly, not only hourly. Ask what is included (food, travel home on days off, holiday cover).
- Backup. Ask who covers when the live-in carer is ill or on annual leave.
Checks that still apply
Whether you use an agency, a listing platform, or a direct hire, still ask for recent DBS information, training and experience that match your needs, and references. Agree tasks, nights, pets, smoking rules, and notice periods in writing. Tax and National Insurance depend on whether you employ someone directly or use an agency — get proper advice if you are unsure.

When another option may fit better
If needs are mainly daytime, visiting care or a care agency rota may be enough. If the home is no longer safe, a care home assessment may be the honest next step. Compare options on our short page: Comparing care options in the UK.
