Overnight care at home means support during the night, when someone may need help to turn, use the toilet, take medicines that a carer is allowed to support with, or stay safe if they wander. Families sometimes add night cover after a hospital stay, when sleep is broken, or when daytime visiting care is not enough. This page is plain English only. It is not a care agency and it does not assess anyone.

What “overnight†usually covers
- Waking night. The carer stays awake and checks in through the night.
- Sleeping night. The carer sleeps in the home but can be woken for agreed needs.
- Live-in with night duties. A live-in carer may include some night support; rest periods still need to be agreed in writing.
Ask which model you are being offered, how many hours are paid as waking time, and what happens if needs change mid-night.
Practical checks before you book
- Which tasks will the carer do at night, and which will they not do?
- May we see recent DBS information, training that matches our needs, and references?
- Who covers if the night carer is ill?
- Is there a written rate for waking vs sleeping nights, travel, and cancelled shifts?
- Does the home have a safe place for the carer to rest if it is a sleeping night?

When another option may fit better
If needs are mainly daytime, visiting care or a care agency rota may be enough. If nights are heavy every night, live-in care or a different setting may be the honest next conversation.
